the nursery alice

Publication Design

Project

This project reimagines the original printing of The Nursery “Alice” as a collectible, hands-on reading experience for children and their parents. The goal was to create a format that encouraged interaction while honouring the charm of the original illustrations.

The design presents the story as a series of collectible postcards, each with the narrative text on the front and a colour illustration on the back. This allows the child to explore the imagery while the parent reads aloud, echoing the original book’s invitations to point out details in the illustrations. The result blends storytelling with visual discovery.

Outcome

Two illustrated storybook pages on wooden stands, one titled 'The Cactus Race' showing a girl and a cactus with a bird, and the other titled 'Bill, the Lizard' showing a lizard on a pedestal with clouds.
A printed story titled 'How Alice Grew Tall' from a nursery called Alice. The page includes text about Alice eating a cake marked 'EAT ME' and growing taller. The paper is on a wooden surface, casting a shadow.
A printed illustration of Alice Grue Tull, a girl with red hair and a green ribbon, standing next to a water fountain and holding a tray labeled "Drink" on top. The illustration is titled "How Alice Grew Tull" and is placed on a wooden table.
Two illustrated tarot cards, 'The Queen's Garden' and 'The Lobster Quadrille,' are placed on a beige surface, with one card on the floor and the other in a wooden box.
Two sheets of printed paper with text in black ink on white paper, placed on light-colored wooden tables. The pages are titled 'How Alice Grew Tall' and 'The Pool of Tears'. The tables are rectangular with a natural wood finish, casting shadows on a beige surface.
